Alex Eala stuns defending champion Leylah Fernandez to advance to DC Open quarterfinals

In a display of composure and firepower, Filipino tennis star Alexandra Eala stunned defending champion and seventh seed Leylah Fernandez, 6-1, 7-6 (2), on Thursday to charge into the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 Mubadala DC Open in the US.

The victory served as a slice of redemption for Eala, 21, currently ranked World No. 28.

Three months ago, on April 14, Fernandez, a Canadian whose mother has Filipino roots, had dealt Eala a swift 1-6, 4-6 defeat on the clay courts of Stuttgart during the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. 

Eala has now flipped the script, displaying sharp court coverage and precise shot-making right out of the gate.

According to a report of the Philippine News Agency, Eala seized control early, storming through an almost flawless 27-minute opening set. 

However, Fernandez — World No. 34 and a former US Open finalist renowned for her grit — mounted a fierce rally in the second set, pushing the Philippine standout to the limit as both players traded baseline blows.

Refusing to let the match slip away, Eala steadied her game in the crucial moments, forcing a tiebreak before blitzing through it to seal the upset victory.

"I know that she was playing a little better, and maybe my level dropped a little bit," Eala reflected in her post-match court interview. 

"Those are very tricky moments when you know your level has dropped and you want to do better, but things just aren't coming out for one reason or another. Patience was key there—just trying to work it out, and having a strong mentality to find solutions."

This victory marks another massive milestone in Eala’s breakout summer, coming just a month after her headline-grabbing shock upset of world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the third round at Wimbledon. 

With each tournament, Eala continues to prove her mettle against top-tier WTA talent.

Up next, Eala awaits the winner of the second-round clash between Ukrainian second seed Elina Svitolina and Uzbek qualifier Polina Kudermetova. Svitolina, who received a first-round bye, enters as a heavy favorite, though Kudermetova arrives with momentum after outlasting Spain’s Cristina Bucșa in a grueling three-set comeback, 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-0.

In other action in the Mubadala DC Open at the Rock Creek Tennis Center in Washington D.C., 2022 tournament champion Liudmila Samsonova made a loud statement of her own, cruising into the quarterfinals with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 victory over China’s Wang Xinyu.

The Mubadala tennis tournament has a total of USD1,637,982 in prize money.
