Alex Eala soars to World No. 20 with historic Washington Open victory

WASHINGTON — Newly minted World No. 20 Alexandra Eala made history on Monday, becoming the first player from the Philippines to win a WTA Tour-level singles title with a stunning comeback victory at the Washington Open.

The milestone came on a double-header final day delayed by heavy weather, which also saw third seed Taylor Fritz claim his first trophy of the season in a tight men’s decider.

Eala Mounts Dramatic Comeback Against Pegula

Resuming a rain-interrupted final trailing top seed Jessica Pegula 4-6, but holding a 2-1 edge in the second set, the 21-year-old Filipina turned the match completely on its head to secure a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 triumph.

Eala overwhelmed the world number three after the restart, winning 10 of the final 13 games. Powered by a dominant left-handed serve and fearless baseline aggression, she raced through a flawless deciding set to the delight of an increasingly vocal partisan crowd.

"I feel so much love. My first chance at a title knowing it won't be the last, and already having achieved this milestone for my career," Eala said during her on-court interview. "I knew whatever happened after this match would have already been a win for me."

Pegula, who was seeking her third Washington crown following titles in 2019 and 2021, was gracious in defeat despite losing on home soil.

"I want to congratulate Alex on an amazing tournament," Pegula said. "To see how far you've come over the last couple of years... to see the amazing fans that follow you every place you go—it's not fun to play against, but I think it's amazing."

The triumph extended Eala's remarkable winning streak against top-10 opposition to five matches—a run that includes victories over Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek, and Elina Svitolina twice. The breakthrough title officially propels Eala to a career-high ranking of World No. 20.

Fritz Captures First Trophy of the Season

In the men's championship, Taylor Fritz edged 19-year-old Spanish phenom Rafa Jodar 7-6(2), 6-4 in a contest also held over from Sunday's rain.

First Set: Neither player dropped serve in a tight opening set before Fritz dominated the tiebreak.

Second Set: The American broke early and held firm against late pressure from Jodar to seal the victory.

The win gives Fritz crucial momentum heading into the Canadian Open—the final ATP Masters 1000 event before the U.S. Open—where he will again lead American hopes looking to end the country’s men's Grand Slam singles drought dating back to 2003.
