Alex Eala cruises into Round of 32 in WTA 1000 Canadian Open

Philippines' Alex Eala delivered another dramatic performance with her 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win against the USA’s Alycia Parks in the WTA 1000 National Bank Open in Canada.

Eala will next face American Caty McNally, who produced an upset win over reigning Wimbledon champion and World No. 7 Linda Noskova, 7-6(5), 6-1.

Eala is coming off her historic journey in Washington, winning her first WTA title after defeating top seed  and World No. 3 Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in a rain-delayed final.

On her path to the WTA 500 crown, Eala defeated an elite field including Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, defending champion Leylah Fernandez, second seed Elina Svitolina, and four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka.

“It's an incredible milestone for me,” Eala said post-match, according to a Reuters report. “At the beginning of the week, there's no way I'd have thought that I'd be holding this trophy... I ended the tournament in better shape than I started. Each match I kept improving and learning things about myself.”

Eala's steady progression—marked by her 2022 US Open junior title, a final appearance in Eastbourne, and a fourth-round run at Wimbledon—has built a massive, passionate fan base across the globe.

Even runner-up Jessica Pegula acknowledged the overwhelming support from the Filipino community in Washington. "It's amazing that you guys showed up. To all the Filipino fans that came out, you are helping grow tennis around the world," Pegula remarked.

With her momentum building, Eala aims to extend her winning run in Toronto before heading to New York for the US Open.

Philippine Senate honors Eala

According to a report of the Philippine News Agency (PNA), the Senate unanimously adopted Proposed Senate Resolution No. 554—consolidating 36 related resolutions—to congratulate and commend Eala for becoming the first Filipino to win a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour-level singles championship at the 2026 Mubadala Citi DC Open.

Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian highlighted Eala’s journey from learning tennis at age four and entering the Rafa Nadal Academy at 13 to becoming the first Filipino Grand Slam junior singles champion.

“Alex has shown all of us that the Filipina can stand among giants and prevail,” Gatchalian said, noting that her breakthrough was built “one game, one set, and one hard-fought match at a time.”

Senator Joel Villanueva, principal author and sponsor of the resolution, emphasized the scale of Eala's achievement. “Four Top 10 players. Five world-class opponents. One historic championship,” Villanueva said, attributing her win to relentless discipline, sacrifice, and belief rather than luck.

Senate Senior Deputy Majority Leader JV Ejercito highlighted the unifying power of her triumph amid national challenges. “Walang kulay. Walang paksyon. Walang kampo; iisa ang ating bandila, iisa ang ating bayan (No political color. No faction. No camp; we have one flag and one country),” Ejercito remarked.

A call for Systemic Sports Reform

Senator Robin Padilla urged lawmakers to translate accolades into concrete financial backing for grassroots development, ensuring families no longer need to incur heavy debts or sell property to support young athletes.

“Ito po ang maituturing na tunay na pagbati kay Alex – kung mababago natin ang sistema (This would be the genuine way of congratulating Alex – if we can change the system),” Padilla stated.

Senator Risa Hontiveros praised Eala as a role model for young Filipino girls, showing that they can compete fearlessly on the global stage while carrying the nation's hopes.
