U.S. midfielder Johnny Cardoso is dealing with a “high-grade” sprain in his right ankle, just five weeks before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, his club Atletico Madrid confirmed on Thursday.
According to the La Liga side, Cardoso will undergo physiotherapy and rehabilitation sessions in the gym, with his return to competition dependent on his recovery progress. The club shared the update through its official X account.
The 24-year-old suffered the injury during a training session. He is currently in his first season with Atletico Madrid after previous spells with Spain’s Real Betis (2023–25) and Brazil’s Sport Club Internacional (2019–23).
Cardoso has earned 23 caps for the United States men's national soccer team since making his senior debut in 2020. His most recent appearance came in a friendly match against Belgium on March 28.
The United States, one of the co-hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, will open its Group D campaign against Paraguay on June 13 in Inglewood, California. The U.S. will then face Australia on June 19 in Seattle before concluding group-stage play against Turkey on June 25 in Inglewood. -Field Level Media/Reuters
