US bars drone flights over sites of World Cup matches

To ensure maximum security during the FIFA World Cup 2026, the FAA is banning unauthorized drones over matches and fan events across the U.S. Violators face steep penalties of up to $100,000, potential criminal charges, and drone confiscation as federal and local agencies deploy advanced mitigation teams.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced Thursday that it will prohibit drone flights over FIFA World Cup 2026 matches and related fan events across the United States to fortify security.

The restrictions will establish strict no-fly zones around key venues and public gatherings throughout the tournament:

Match Days: All aircraft operations, including drones, are prohibited within a three-nautical-mile radius and up to 3,000 feet above ground level around stadiums, unless specifically authorized by air traffic control.

Fan Events: Drones will be barred within a one-nautical-mile radius and up to 1,000 feet above ground level at official fan zones nationwide.

Severe Penalties for Violations

The FAA emphasized that unauthorized drone operators who breach the restricted airspace will face severe consequences. Penalties include:

Fines of up to $100,000

Criminal prosecution

Confiscation of the drone equipment

To enforce these rules, the FBI will deploy dedicated drone mitigation teams around World Cup stadiums as an additional layer of protection.

Local and Federal Defense Infrastructure

Local law enforcement agencies are also ramping up their defenses. New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch recently shared that the department received new authority to collaborate with federal partners to confront credible drone threats at major events.

"Over the past several months, we have purchased $6.5 million in drone-mitigation equipment," Tisch stated, noting that drones can easily be adapted as "weapons of war."

New York authorities remain on high alert across multiple major gatherings, including the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.

Rising Concerns Over Aerial Security

Lawmakers and security officials have repeatedly expressed alarm over recent drone incidents near airports and sporting events.

The heightened security measures follow a string of high-profile airspace violations. Last year, a man pleaded guilty to violating defense airspace after flying a drone over the NFL AFC Championship game in Baltimore. In a separate incident, a Massachusetts man was charged with unlawfully flying a drone near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, forcing law enforcement to seize the aircraft mid-air.
