PARIS — Russia’s Diana Shnaider overcame a second-set blip to battle past American Madison Keys 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 at the French Open on Monday, advancing to her maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal.

The 22-year-old left-hander, seeded 25th, had to recover from a second-set concentration lapse before dishing out a bagel in the decider. Utilizing her heavy topspin forehand, she successfully booked her spot in the last eight.

After three straight career losses to Keys, Shnaider earned her first win over the American in their first-ever meeting on clay.

A See-Saw Battle

Neither player was able to hold serve for the first four games of the match. While Shnaider, ranked 23rd in the world, managed to hold on her third attempt, Keys failed to do so until Shnaider had surged to a 5-2 lead.

Keys, the 2025 Australian Open champion, could do nothing to stop the Russian from clinching the first set a game later with a powerful forehand down the line.

The tables turned in the second set. Keys came out more aggressive, significantly reducing her unforced errors to level the match.

Domination in the Decider

However, Shnaider quickly recovered her composure. She raced through the deciding set without dropping a single game to secure the victory.

With this milestone win, Shnaider sets up a blockbuster quarterfinal clash against either top seed Aryna Sabalenka or former world number one Naomi Osaka.
