LONDON — Jasmine Paolini ended Alexandra Eala's historic Wimbledon campaign with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory in the fourth round on a scorching Centre Court on Monday.

The 21-year-old left-hander became the first Filipino player to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam singles tournament. Seeded 29th, Eala challenged last year's Wimbledon runner-up throughout an entertaining three-set match.

Eala had captured the attention of Wimbledon fans with her energetic personality and aggressive style of play, highlighted by her upset victory over defending champion Iga Świątek in the previous round.

However, Paolini, the tournament's 13th seed, raised her level in the crucial moments to secure a place in the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the second time.

Paolini arrived at Wimbledon with concerns over a foot injury that had limited her grass-court preparation to just one warm-up match. She also struggled in her tournament opener, losing the first set 6-0 to Robin Montgomery before recovering to win.

"I came here without many matches in the last month and after the first set in the first round, it was like, 'Okay, I can only get better, it can't go worse,'" Paolini said after the match.

"I'm feeling better point by point and game by game. Grass is a weird surface. Sometimes you love it, sometimes you hate it, but when you play well and feel good, it's the best surface."

Paolini also received support from fellow Italian and Formula One championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who watched from the Royal Box alongside tennis great Roger Federer.

Meanwhile, Eala's breakthrough run drew widespread support back home, where about 8,000 fans gathered at PhilSports Arena in Manila to watch the match.

Paolini raced to a 4-1 lead in the opening set as Eala struggled to settle. Although the Filipina broke back when Paolini served for the set, she immediately dropped her own serve to hand the Italian the advantage.

Eala responded strongly in the second set, finding greater consistency from the baseline. After exchanging service breaks, she earned another break and held serve to force a deciding third set.

The final set remained evenly contested until Paolini's experience proved decisive. She broke Eala's serve for a 5-3 lead before closing out the match when Eala sent a return wide.

Despite the defeat, Eala viewed her Wimbledon breakthrough as an important milestone in her career.

"It's been one of my best results, right? Of course, it will add confidence," Eala said. "I think it's important that every match I played this week, and every match that I play, I go in with the self-esteem and the thought that I'm able to win." -Reporting by Martyn Herman; Editing by Alison Williams/Reuters
