INDIAN WELLS, California – Aryna Sabalenka claimed the Indian Wells title on Sunday with a gritty 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(6) victory over Elena Rybakina, proving once again why she is the world number one.

Sabalenka, who had lost to Rybakina in the 2023 final as well as in last year’s WTA Finals and the Australian Open in January, appeared on the brink of another defeat in the Californian desert.

Despite the early setback, the four-time Grand Slam champion showcased her resilience and fighting spirit, clawing her way back to secure the win.

“The whole point was to have A, B, C, D, E, and so on plans. Today, A, B, and C definitely didn’t work,” Sabalenka said after the match. “So I had to basically run there and put as many balls back as possible. Once I felt more confident, I went back to my usual game, which is aggressive and dominating.

“I’m super happy that I was able to progress that far and use the many tools in my game, so no matter what happens, I can still find the small things that help me win the match.”

Reflecting on past losses in major finals, Sabalenka said those experiences strengthened her mentally.

“With so many finals I’ve lost, they’ve taught me that the match is never over until it’s over. Even at match point, you still have a chance to turn things around,” she explained. “That’s something I’ve learned – to be mentally strong no matter what. Even after painful losses, I’m able to go out there, stay focused, and fight.” -Reporting by Shrivathsa Sridhar in Bengaluru; Editing by Peter Rutherford/Reuters
