TENNIS: Alcaraz stunned by Korda at Miami Open

World number one Carlos Alcaraz suffered a shocking 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 defeat to Sebastian Korda in the third round of the Miami Open on Sunday, giving the American the biggest win of his career.

Korda, 25, appeared to have missed his chance in the second set when he failed to serve out the match. However, he stayed composed, broke Alcaraz for a 5-3 lead in the third set, and sealed the victory with an unreturnable serve on match point.

The Florida native, ranked 36th in the world, varied his game effectively, using serve-and-volley tactics to secure his first-ever win over a top-ranked player, while Alcaraz played below his usual standard.

Alcaraz began the year by capturing his seventh Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and had remained unbeaten until his semi-final loss to Daniil Medvedev at Indian Wells. He also suffered an early exit from last year’s Miami Open, losing in the second round to unseeded David Goffin of Belgium.

Korda, the 32nd seed, will face either Karen Khachanov or Martin Landaluce in the round of 16. -Reporting by Rory CarrollEditing by Toby Davis/Reuters
