England survived nearly an entire half with 10 men to defeat Mexico, 3-2, in a thrilling FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match Sunday night at Estadio Azteca.
Jude Bellingham scored twice in a span of 98 seconds late in the first half, while Harry Kane added his sixth goal of the tournament from the penalty spot and assisted on another as England advanced to the quarterfinals.
England will face Norway on July 11 in Miami Gardens, Florida, after Norway defeated Brazil 2-1 earlier in the day.
Despite playing a man down from the 54th minute, England held off a relentless Mexico attack to secure the victory.
Jarell Quansah was shown a straight red card after a video review determined his sliding tackle on Jesus Gallardo endangered the opponent.
England responded six minutes later by extending its lead. Anthony Gordon earned a penalty after being brought down by goalkeeper Raul Rangel inside the box, and Kane converted the spot kick to make it 3-1.
Mexico pulled within one goal in the 69th minute when Raul Jimenez scored from the penalty spot after Kane was penalized for a high kick inside the area.
The hosts pushed for an equalizer, finishing with a 20-6 advantage in total shots, but England's defense held firm through a lengthy period of stoppage time to preserve the win.
England took the lead late in the first half when Bukayo Saka delivered a cross that Bellingham converted with a diving header in the 36th minute.
Less than two minutes later, Bellingham doubled the advantage after Kane set him up following a Mexico turnover in midfield.
Mexico responded before halftime when Julian Quinones capitalized on a loose ball inside the penalty area and fired home his fourth goal of the tournament.
Jordan Pickford made three saves for England, while Rangel stopped two shots for Mexico.
Following the defeat, Mexico coach Javier Aguirre announced he was stepping down after his third stint in charge of the national team. Assistant coach and former Mexico captain Rafa Marquez will take over the role.
The match, which was delayed by an hour because of heavy rain, was played in front of a packed crowd at the historic Estadio Azteca. -Field Level Media/Reuters
