VANCOUVER — Switzerland advanced to the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a scoreless draw after extra time on Tuesday.
Ruben Vargas converted the decisive penalty to seal the victory after a tightly contested match that ended 0-0 through 120 minutes.
Switzerland was without Johan Manzambi, who missed the match because of injury. Both teams struggled to create clear scoring opportunities in a cautious tactical battle.
Colombia came closest to breaking the deadlock in extra time when Jhon Lucumi's header from a corner struck the crossbar.
The penalty shootout featured several dramatic moments. Colombia's Davinson Sanchez hit the crossbar with his attempt, while Switzerland's Manuel Akanji also missed after sending his penalty over the bar. Colombia's Cucho Hernandez then had his shot saved, allowing Vargas to convert the winning kick.
The match marked the final FIFA World Cup game played in Canada during the tournament.
