LONDON — Southampton became the first non-Premier League club to reach the quarter-finals of this season's FA Cup after a 1-0 victory against Fulham on Sunday. The win was sealed by a late penalty.
The match looked set for extra time until Finn Azaz was fouled in the box by Joachim Andersen. Substitute Ross Stewart calmly converted the penalty to give Southampton the historic win.
The result was a fair reflection of Southampton’s performance, as the Championship side created the better chances. Azaz had a strong opportunity earlier that was brilliantly saved by Fulham goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte, who had also denied a chance for Tom Fellows.
Southampton join a strong group of teams already through to the quarter-finals, including Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool.
FA Cup fifth-round action continues on Sunday with third-tier Port Vale hosting Premier League side Sunderland, and Leeds United taking on Norwich City at home. West Ham United face Brentford on Monday.
