NEW YORK — Pedro Porro has emerged as one of Spain's standout performers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, cementing his place at right back with another impressive display in the team's 2-0 semifinal victory over France in Dallas.
Porro played a key role in containing France's dangerous attack before scoring a stunning goal to help send Spain into the World Cup final. His performance earned him the semifinal's Most Valuable Player honor and further strengthened his claim as Spain's first-choice right back.
Spain entered the tournament with uncertainty at the position following the departures of Dani Carvajal and Jesus Navas. Marcos Llorente was considered a leading candidate, but head coach Luis de la Fuente continued to rotate his options before ultimately placing his trust in Porro.
The Tottenham Hotspur defender rewarded that confidence with consistent performances throughout the tournament, impressing against Saudi Arabia, Austria, Portugal, and most recently France.
"I'm very happy with the team's attitude, from start to finish. Today we did everything we needed to do. It's a dream come true; it's something I couldn't even have imagined in my wildest dreams," Porro said after the match.
Porro's rise mirrors the breakthrough of Marc Cucurella during Euro 2024, when the left back unexpectedly claimed a starting role and established himself as one of Spain's top performers.
Beyond his defensive work, Porro has provided balance on Spain's right flank through his positioning, timely forward runs, and support for winger Lamine Yamal. His all-around play has become an important part of Spain's success during the tournament.
The performance against France also marked a measure of redemption for Porro, who had faced criticism after an error contributed to Spain's defeat against Scotland during the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.
Tottenham recently rewarded the defender with a contract extension during the World Cup despite reported interest from several clubs, including Manchester City.
Porro will now look to cap his breakthrough tournament when Spain faces Argentina in Sunday's World Cup final, with the opportunity to help deliver the country's first World Cup title since 2010. -Reporting by Fernando KallasEditing by Christian Radnedge/Reuters
