SYDNEY — Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer said he is motivated to make a statement in the upcoming Premier League season after missing out on England's World Cup squad.

Palmer, who was left out of manager Thomas Tuchel's squad following an injury-hit season, said the disappointment of missing the tournament would push him to perform at his best in the new campaign.

"Naturally it's going to," the 24-year-old told reporters on Friday ahead of Chelsea's pre-season friendly against Tottenham Hotspur in Sydney.

"It's like anything. If someone told you you're essentially not good enough to get in the squad, then you're gonna think, all right, it's like whatever then, and try and go that extra bit harder."

Palmer returns with positive mindset

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso said Palmer returned from his break with a strong mentality and a renewed focus.

"He's going to be a leader on the pitch. The better the Cole we have, the better Chelsea we will have, that's for sure," Alonso said.

The Spanish coach added that proper training and preparation would be important for Palmer, who he believes has shown the right attitude since returning to the squad.

Palmer said he was eager to return to action after a six-week offseason break and was excited to reunite with close friend Morgan Rogers, who joined Chelsea last week in a reported £117 million ($157.5 million) transfer from British media.

The two midfielders previously played together in Manchester City's academy, and Palmer revealed he already knew about Rogers' move before it became public.

"It was a difficult secret to keep, but I kept it," Palmer said with a laugh.

Palmer said he believes he and Rogers can complement each other despite having different playing styles.

"He's more physical than me, on and off the ball. He likes to drive with it. I like to play passes," he said.

"So yeah, I think we can play well together."

Palmer was also asked about his trademark goal celebration, where he crosses his arms and rubs his shoulders as if he is shivering. The celebration became associated with Palmer but was later revealed to have been inspired by Rogers when they played together as youngsters.

"He does it. I do it. I've trademarked it. So if he tries to do anything, you know, bailiffs at his door," Palmer joked.

"Nah, we'll do it together I think."
