New Jersey on Thursday lowered its round-trip fare to World Cup games at MetLife Stadium from $150 to $105, local media reported, following criticism from FIFA over the original price.

Despite the reduction, the fare remains significantly higher than the typical cost of less than $15 for the same route and exceeds the $80 round-trip fare for FIFA’s own shuttle service to the 82,500-seat stadium. MetLife Stadium is set to host eight World Cup matches, including the final on July 19.

Kris Kolluri, CEO of New Jersey’s public transportation provider NJ Transit, had previously defended the higher fare, citing the need for enhanced security and an increased number of passengers due to the closure of public parking around the stadium.

Reuters has reached out to NJ Transit for comment on the revised fare.

Heimo Schirgi, Chief Operating Officer of the 2026 World Cup, said the original $150 fare could have “a chilling effect” on fans.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill had earlier suggested that FIFA should cover the transportation costs, noting that NJ Transit had been “stuck with a $48 million bill” to ensure fan safety.
