Legendary Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa made his final World Cup appearance a memorable one, receiving a hero’s welcome during Mexico’s Group A finale against the Czech Republic.
Despite Mexico already securing a spot in the next round, manager Javier Aguirre did not start the 40-year-old goalkeeper on Wednesday. However, with Mexico holding a 2-0 lead, Aguirre sent Ochoa onto the field in the 78th minute for his 154th international appearance, earning a loud ovation from the packed crowd.
With El Tri in control of the match, Ochoa had little action to handle but took in the emotional moment of officially appearing in his fourth World Cup. He celebrated passionately when Alvaro Fidalgo scored Mexico’s third goal in second-half stoppage time and was surrounded by teammates after the final whistle.
Ochoa, Mexico’s third-most capped player and the country’s most-capped goalkeeper, has built one of the most decorated careers in Mexican soccer history. He was part of four CONCACAF Gold Cup-winning teams and represented Mexico at six World Cups, including appearances in 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026. He was also part of the squads in 2006 and 2010 but did not play.
His final World Cup appearance came at the same Mexico City stadium where he played most of his club career. Ochoa recorded 309 league appearances for Club America, one of Mexico’s biggest soccer clubs.
“Many years in my mind, many stories,” Ochoa said after the match. “My first match here in this goal. Lifting trophies here with my club. Moments with the national team in qualifiers. Moments of World Cups, the affection of the people. I think grateful, nothing more. I think words of gratitude to the people, to the teammates, to the coach for letting me live this last moment.”
