MEXICO CITY — Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre credited the team's strong connection with its fans after the co-hosts secured a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a 2-0 victory over Ecuador on Tuesday.

Mexico advanced after recording its fourth consecutive win of the tournament without conceding a goal. More than 80,000 supporters packed Estadio Azteca, cheering throughout the match and creating a lively atmosphere.

"This connection we have with the fans is a driving force," Aguirre said during a post-match press conference.

The 67-year-old coach said the victory was especially meaningful because it came in front of the home crowd.

"I've had some great victories, but none like today's, because it's at home, with your own people," said Aguirre, who also coached Mexico at the 2002 and 2010 FIFA World Cups.

Mexico will return to Estadio Azteca on Sunday for its Round of 16 match against the winner of the game between England and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Aguirre also praised Ecuador, noting the South American side's strong qualifying campaign, in which it finished second with only two defeats in 18 matches.

"It is not easy to beat Ecuador," he said.

While satisfied with his team's overall performance, Aguirre said Mexico could have been more clinical on the counterattack and converted additional chances to put the match beyond doubt. -Reporting by Diego Oré; Editing by Peter Rutherford/Reuters
