MEXICO CITY – Mexico’s national team ended a long-standing opening-day curse on Thursday, defeating South Africa 2-0 in front of a roaring crowd of 80,000 at the Azteca Stadium. The victory marked the first time Mexico had won on the first day of a World Cup, overcoming a streak of seven previous opening-day losses.

“It broke the curse, and what better place to do it than at home,” said Arturo Lopez, 32, attending the match. “It’s the dream of all kids who love soccer to be able to attend one time in our lifetime.”

The match was intense, featuring three red cards, but an early goal by Julian Quinones in the ninth minute set the tone and electrified the stadium.

“The crowd—it energized the team,” said Beth Navaez, who also attended the World Cups in Russia and Qatar. “Seeing them play in Mexico was even more exciting.”

Despite the win, some fans remained cautious about the team’s chances. “We always have hope, but they always disappoint,” Navaez added.

Elsewhere in the city, the central Zócalo fan zone welcomed 50,000 fans, who danced and sang despite light rain. The square had previously been barricaded and surrounded by a camp of protesting teachers in the days leading up to the match.

“I’m content, I’m happy, I’m 100% Mexican,” said Marta Gonzalez, 42, as she left the Zócalo with her children.
