MADRID — Atletico Madrid welcome Barcelona to a sold-out Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final, with the hosts aiming to reach the semi-finals for the first time in nine years.

Holding a 2-0 advantage from the first leg at Camp Nou, Atletico are in a strong position but remain fully aware of the challenge ahead against a Barcelona side known for their high-intensity pressing and attacking control.

Atletico captain Koke, a product of the club’s academy and a veteran of their 2014 and 2016 Champions League final runs, said the squad is focused solely on finishing the job before thinking about their upcoming Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad.

“Obviously, this could be a match for our history books,” Koke said on Monday. “Reaching the semi-finals again after so many years would be incredible. We are not thinking about the final yet. We have to approach this like it is the final itself.”

The 33-year-old midfielder also reflected on his decisive goal against Barcelona in the 2014 campaign, a moment that helped send Atletico into the last four.

“I’ve watched it several times,” he said. “In matches like this, those memories give you extra motivation.”

While Atletico’s cup performances have impressed this season, their LaLiga campaign has stalled following three straight defeats to Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Sevilla FC, effectively ending their title challenge. Manager Diego Simeone has rotated heavily in recent league fixtures to prioritise knockout competitions.

At the top of the table, Barcelona lead LaLiga with 79 points, nine ahead of Real Madrid. Villarreal CF sit third on 61 points, while Atletico remain fourth on 57, comfortably ahead of Real Betis in fifth as the race for Champions League qualification nears its conclusion.

Barcelona face a difficult task in Madrid, where Atletico have lost only three times in all competitions this season, with none of those defeats by more than a single goal.

“It is natural that they feel confident,” Koke added. “But we are ready. We respect them, but we are determined to win. Barcelona are a team that can suffocate you with pressure, so we must stay calm and keep possession.”

Beyond Europe, Atletico are also preparing for a Copa del Rey final showdown with Real Sociedad this weekend, aiming to secure silverware after a demanding season across multiple competitions. -Reporting by Fernando Kallas, editing by Ed Osmond/Reuters
