Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman defended his decision to adopt a more defensive approach against Morocco, saying it was based on tactical analysis rather than fear, after his side was eliminated from the FIFA World Cup on Monday.
Koeman fielded five defenders as the Netherlands fell 3-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time. Despite anticipating criticism for abandoning the traditional Dutch attacking style, he said the strategy gave his team a better chance of winning.
"With this defensive approach, we gave away much less than we did during the group matches," Koeman said. "That was positive, but we were also less offensive."
He argued that the tactical adjustment was necessary against a stronger opponent.
"You can think of the tactics whatever you like, but we gave away much less against a team much stronger than Sweden and Tunisia. If I had to do it again, I would do it the same way," he said.
Koeman added that had Morocco not scored a late equalizer, the reaction to his tactical decision would likely have been different.
"I also know that if Morocco hadn't equalized with that late goal, there would be all sorts of compliments for me as the Dutch coach," he said. "Now, probably, I'm going to be criticized for choosing five defenders, but once again, I believe it was necessary."
The Dutch coach said he discussed the tactical approach with his players beforehand and that they were in agreement.
"It was not about being afraid," Koeman said. "This is about a better defensive position, not out of fear, but based on an analysis of the opposition."
