EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland delivered one of the finest performances of his career, making several crucial saves to help his team stun Brazil, 2-1, and advance to the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals on Sunday.
Nyland's standout display included an early penalty save against Bruno Guimaraes, giving Norway the momentum in a match where Brazil dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities.
The 35-year-old also denied Vinicius Jr. and Emerick with a series of key stops and produced a remarkable reflex save to prevent an own goal by Kristoffer Ajer, tipping the ball onto the post to preserve Norway's advantage.
Nyland's place in Norway's starting lineup became possible after FIFA rejected Bodo/Glimt goalkeeper Nikita Haikin's request to switch his international eligibility from Russia to Norway. Haikin, who had represented Russia at the Under-21 level, was deemed ineligible under FIFA's residency requirements, allowing Nyland to retain the starting role.
The veteran goalkeeper entered the tournament after an uncertain club season. His contract with Spanish side Sevilla expired at the end of the 2025-26 campaign, and he spent much of the season serving as a backup.
Despite his uncertain club future, Nyland rose to the occasion on the sport's biggest stage.
"It's great to be here in the World Cup, in the most important match of my life," Nyland said after the victory. He also thanked his wife, Tine, his three children, and the rest of his family for supporting him throughout his career.
The match ended with tense moments as Nyland exchanged words with Neymar after Brazil was awarded a late penalty. Neymar converted from the spot to cut the deficit, but Norway held on until the final whistle to secure a historic victory.
Following the match, Nyland said he had not yet checked for potential contract offers and was focused on enjoying the biggest win of his career.
"I haven't checked my phone yet," he said. "First, I have to go through doping control, and then I'll enjoy this moment. It's been the most important game of my career."
