ARLINGTON, Texas — France’s bid for the FIFA World Cup title came to an abrupt end after a 2-0 semifinal loss to Spain on Tuesday, as Didier Deschamps’ side was comprehensively outplayed in one of its poorest performances of the tournament.

Widely considered one of the favorites to win the World Cup, France struggled to match Spain’s intensity, control, and composure throughout the match. Unlike the 2022 World Cup final against Argentina, when France recovered from a slow start before eventually losing on penalties, there was no comeback this time.

Coach Didier Deschamps admitted his team was second-best and said the defeat reflected Spain’s superiority on the day.

"The players are devastated, but we have to be clear-headed. Technically, we were second best. That is on us," Deschamps said.

France also acknowledged that Spain’s ability to dictate the pace of the game proved difficult to overcome. Substitute Rayan Cherki said his side expected Spain to slow the tempo at times but struggled to respond effectively.

Spain, led by teenage star Lamine Yamal, controlled possession and dictated the match from midfield, leaving France with few opportunities to create meaningful attacks.

Michael Olise, who had drawn praise throughout the tournament for his creativity, endured a difficult afternoon. He repeatedly lost possession and failed to complete a successful dribble as Spain’s midfield, led by Rodri, limited his influence.

France’s attacking trio also failed to make an impact. Ousmane Dembele offered little threat, while Bradley Barcola and substitute Desire Doue were unable to break through Spain’s organized defense. Captain Kylian Mbappe was likewise unable to produce the decisive moment France had hoped for.

Spain’s dominance extended to the midfield, where Adrien Rabiot’s early yellow card reduced his effectiveness, while Aurelien Tchouameni struggled after returning from a hamstring injury that sidelined him for France’s previous two matches.

France’s defensive mistakes proved costly. Spain opened the scoring in the 22nd minute through a penalty converted by Mikel Oyarzabal before Pedro Porro doubled the lead shortly before the hour mark.

At the final whistle, the disappointment was evident across the French squad. Mbappe remained alone on the field, while several teammates dropped to their knees or covered their faces as Spain celebrated its place in the World Cup final.
