LONDON – Nottingham Forest manager Vitor Pereira expressed hope that his medical staff could quickly resolve Morgan Gibbs-White’s head injury after the midfielder was forced off in a 3-1 Premier League win over Chelsea on Monday, just days before a crucial Europa League semifinal second leg.
Gibbs-White, who has been in outstanding form in recent months, started the match on the bench as Forest continued their strong push to secure safety in the Premier League against an inconsistent Chelsea side.
Introduced at halftime, the England international immediately made an impact, delivering the assist for Taiwo Awoniyi’s goal in the 52nd minute that extended Forest’s lead. However, his evening was cut short in the 66th minute after a collision of heads with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who also had to be substituted.
Despite the worrying incident, Pereira delivered a cautiously optimistic update after the match, suggesting that Gibbs-White could still be available for Thursday’s decisive Europa League clash against Aston Villa, with Forest holding a 1-0 advantage from the first leg.
“He is speaking normally, he is remembering everything,” Pereira said. “He has a deep cut, but at the moment it does not look serious. We are waiting for the doctors, and we hope they can work magic on him.”
The Forest boss also praised Gibbs-White’s resilience, calling him a key figure in the squad’s recent success. The midfielder has scored 10 Premier League goals and provided three assists since the start of the year, underlining his importance to the team’s attacking play.
“He is a fighter,” Pereira added.
There was further concern after another clash of heads involving Zach Abbott and Chelsea’s Jesse Shaun Derry, who was taken to hospital as a precaution. Pereira said he did not expect any serious issues from that incident but confirmed both players would be monitored closely.
The former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager, appointed as Forest’s fourth head coach of the season in February, also praised his team’s consistency and mentality. The victory extended Forest’s unbeaten run in all competitions to 10 matches.
Pereira made eight changes to the side that faced Aston Villa in the first leg, resting several regular starters. Despite the rotation, Forest maintained control for much of the match and capitalized on a disjointed Chelsea performance.
“I can change the players, but I will not change the spirit of this team,” Pereira said.
The result moves Forest six points clear of the Premier League relegation zone, strengthening their position as the season approaches its final stages, while also building momentum ahead of their European semifinal decider. -Writing by William Schomberg, editing by Pritha Sarkar/Reuters
