An early goal by Morgan Gibbs-White led Nottingham Forest to a 1-0 victory over 10-man Porto, securing a 2-1 aggregate win and a spot in the all-English Europa League semi-finals. Forest will now face Aston Villa, who dominated Bologna 4-0 in the second leg, advancing 7-1 on aggregate.
The clash at the City Ground saw Porto's Jan Bednarek sent off after just eight minutes for a reckless challenge on Forest's Chris Wood. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Porto remained resilient, with William Gomes hitting the woodwork. However, Gibbs-White capitalized on the disruption, scoring a deflected goal four minutes after Bednarek's red card. In an emotional moment, the midfielder held up a shirt in tribute to Elliot Anderson, who had withdrawn from the match due to the death of his mother.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa cruised to a comfortable victory over Bologna. Villa went 3-0 up by halftime with goals from Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Buendia, and Morgan Rogers. Ezri Konsa added a late goal to complete the 4-0 rout, propelling Villa into the semi-finals.
Braga and Freiburg’s Historic Runs
In a thrilling encounter in Seville, Braga pulled off a remarkable comeback to defeat Real Betis 4-2, overturning a 2-0 deficit to win 5-3 on aggregate. Betis had taken an early lead with goals from Antony and Abde Ezzalzouli, but Braga responded with strikes from Pau Victor, Vitor Carvalho, and a penalty from Ricardo Horta. Jean-Baptiste Gorby sealed the win with a late goal, sending Braga into their first-ever European semi-final.
Freiburg, on the other hand, also made history by reaching their first European semi-final after a dominant 3-1 win over Celta Vigo, completing a 6-1 aggregate victory. Igor Matanovic opened the scoring, and Yuito Suzuki netted a brace. Williot Swedberg scored a stoppage-time consolation for Celta, but Freiburg’s place in the semi-finals was already secured.
Conference League Update
In the Conference League, Strasbourg advanced with a 4-2 aggregate win over Mainz and will face Rayo Vallecano, who edged AEK Athens 4-3 on aggregate. Crystal Palace also advanced despite a 2-1 loss at Fiorentina, progressing 4-2 overall to face Shakhtar Donetsk, who eliminated AZ Alkmaar 5-2 after a 2-2 draw in the second leg.
Finals Dates
The Europa League final is set for May 20 at Besiktas Stadium in Istanbul, while the Conference League final will take place on May 27 at the RB Stadium in Leipzig, Germany.
