LONDON – Chelsea suffered a humiliating 3-1 home defeat to a second-string Nottingham Forest side in the Premier League on Monday, ending any remaining hopes of a top-five finish and Champions League qualification next season.

It was Chelsea’s sixth straight league defeat, as a disjointed and error-prone performance once again exposed their struggles. Forest struck early, going ahead inside two minutes when Taiwo Awoniyi powered in a sharp header. The striker doubled his tally in the 52nd minute with a breakaway finish, while Igor Jesus had earlier converted a 15th-minute penalty to extend the visitors’ control.

Chelsea’s frustrations deepened when Cole Palmer missed a penalty just before halftime, following a lengthy delay after 18-year-old Forest winger Jesse Shaun Derry was taken to hospital after a head collision with Zach Abbott.

The match was further disrupted in the second half by additional injury scares, as Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and Forest substitute Morgan Gibbs-White both required treatment for head injuries. Fortunately, both players were able to continue and walk off the pitch.

Chelsea managed a late consolation in stoppage time when Joao Pedro produced a spectacular overhead kick in the 93rd minute, but it did little to mask another disappointing night for the London club.

Forest, despite still being not mathematically safe from relegation, rotated several key players ahead of their Europa League semifinal second leg against Aston Villa on Thursday, a decision that still yielded a commanding away victory.
