FIFA has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate the post-match brawl that erupted after Spain's 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Spain claimed its second World Cup title after winger Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in extra time. Argentina had already been reduced to 10 players in the 93rd minute of regulation after midfielder Enzo Fernandez was sent off following his second yellow card.
Tensions escalated immediately after the final whistle when Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes confronted several Spain players, including defender Eric Garcia and midfielder Gavi. The altercation quickly grew into a larger confrontation involving players from both teams.
Players exchanged shoves before officials and team staff intervened to separate the two squads. Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni was also seen attempting to calm his players during the heated aftermath.
FIFA said a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor has been assigned to review the incident but did not provide a timeline for when the investigation will be completed. -Reporting by Tommy Lund in Gdansk and Karan Prashant Saxena in Bangalore, editing by Pritha Sarkar/Reuters
