Football fans arriving in Vancouver for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are facing high ticket prices, but many say the experience is worth the cost, driven by personal connections, family traditions, and a passion for the sport.
The tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, officially began on Thursday. Vancouver is set to host its first match on Saturday, when Turkey takes on Australia in a Group D fixture.
For some supporters, the journey to Vancouver is about more than football. A fan from Germany said his visit was inspired by his late father, who had a special fondness for the city.
Harold, who traveled from Germany, said he was pleased to secure tickets for the Australia-Turkey match despite the rising costs of attending major international tournaments.
He said he paid $150 for his ticket, describing it as expensive but still a fortunate purchase given current prices.
Harold noted that he had attended previous World Cups in Germany and Brazil and said the cost of following the tournament continues to increase. Despite that, he believes the atmosphere and experience remain unmatched.
For Australian supporter Mark Wright, the value of attending the World Cup extends far beyond the price of admission. Accompanied by his family, Wright is attending his fifth World Cup and said the tournament provides memories that last a lifetime.
Australia has become a regular participant on football’s biggest stage, qualifying for six consecutive World Cups and reaching the Round of 16 twice during that span, most recently in Qatar.
Wright said attending the World Cup has never been about the financial cost but rather the opportunity to support his country and spend meaningful time with loved ones.
He added that the tournament brings out the best in host cities and countries, creating a positive atmosphere that benefits both residents and visitors. According to Wright, the shared excitement and celebration surrounding the World Cup help create a unique sense of unity among fans from around the world.
As Vancouver prepares to welcome supporters from across the globe, many fans say the memories, emotions, and experiences gained from attending the World Cup far outweigh the financial challenges of being there. -Reporting by Mohammed Benmansour, writing by Pearl Josephine Nazare in Vancouver, editing by Ed Osmond/Reuters
