Aston Villa’s resurgence as a major force in football reached a historic high on Wednesday as manager Unai Emery guided the club to a 3-0 victory over Freiburg in the Europa League final in Turkey. The triumph not only cemented Emery’s reputation as the undisputed king of the Europa League but also delivered Villa their first major trophy in 30 years.

The 54-year-old Spaniard joined Villa in late 2022 when the Midlands club was perilously close to the Premier League relegation zone, with fans longing for the glories of the 1980s and 1990s. Under Emery, Villa has climbed to the upper echelons of the Premier League, earned a place in the Champions League, and now lifted European silverware.

The final showcased Villa’s strengths under Emery: tactical intelligence, defensive resilience, and clinical finishing in attack.

“This final is the confirmation of how we are progressing,” Emery told TNT. “Europe gave us a lot.”

As the goals went in, Villa’s players were cheered by hordes of traveling supporters from Birmingham, including one of the club’s most famous fans, Prince William. The Duke of Cambridge celebrated the victory on X, writing: “Amazing night!! Huge congratulations to all the players, team, staff and everyone connected to the club! 44 years since the last taste of European silverware! With this manager in charge, anything is possible.”

Emery expressed pride in having strengthened Villa’s “brand” and said he now aims to establish them as a top Premier League side while pursuing further success in next year’s Champions League.

“We’ll Go Down in History”

Captain John McGinn dedicated the victory to Villa fans who supported the team through thick and thin, including their three-year spell in the second-tier Championship from 2016 to 2019.

“I can’t believe it, to be honest, what we’ve been through as a club. This club was close to being in a really bad way seven years ago,” McGinn said. “Tonight was everything we’ve built coming together. The pride I felt at 3-0 with ten minutes to go, thinking we’re European champions, is something I can’t even describe. It’s so special—I’ll cherish every minute.”

Emery, nicknamed “Mr. Europa League” and “King of the Europa League,” has now lifted Europe’s second most prestigious club trophy five times. Notably, each of his winning clubs contains the letters “villa”: Sevilla (2014, 2015, 2016), Villarreal (2021), and now Aston Villa.

It is Villa’s first trophy since the English League Cup in 1996 and their first European triumph since the 1982 European Cup.

“We’ve worked so hard for this,” said striker Morgan Rogers. “We knew we had one more game to give it our all, and we delivered. Great moment for the fans, great moment for the club—we’ll go down in history.”
