Canada secured a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after Stephen Eustaquio scored deep into second-half stoppage time to seal a 1-0 victory over South Africa in their Round of 32 match on Sunday in Inglewood, California.
Eustaquio capitalized on a poor headed clearance, unleashing a powerful strike from just outside the penalty area that found the lower-left corner to give Canada a dramatic late winner.
The victory sends Canada to the Round of 16, where it will face the winner of the Morocco-Netherlands match in Houston on Saturday.
Canada controlled much of the contest, outshooting South Africa 18-12 overall and holding a 7-1 advantage in shots on target.
Captain Alphonso Davies made his long-awaited return in the 75th minute after recovering from a hamstring injury suffered on May 6. The Bayern Munich defender quickly made an impact, setting up Promise David for a chance that narrowly missed the left post.
South Africa relied on goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and timely defending to keep the match scoreless for much of the game. Shortly after the hour mark, Williams rushed off his line to deny Tani Oluwaseyi, while Mbekezeli Mbokazi cleared the rebound before Jonathan David could convert from close range.
Both teams were making their first appearance in the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup.
Canada created the better opportunities throughout the first half, particularly from set pieces. In the 44th minute, Moise Bombito's header from a corner kick was blocked on the goal line by Aubrey Modiba before Williams reacted quickly to save Tajon Buchanan's follow-up effort.
Moments later, Richie Laryea went down inside the penalty area following a challenge from Khuliso Mudau, but the referee's decision not to award a penalty stood after a video review.
Earlier in the first half, Jonathan David volleyed a corner kick wide of the target, while Williams also denied Derek Cornelius' header from a free kick.
Canada entered halftime with an 8-3 edge in total attempts and a 4-1 advantage in shots on target.
Canadian supporters filled most of the stadium, providing a strong home-like atmosphere despite the team missing out on hosting the match in Vancouver after finishing second in Group B following a loss to Switzerland.
Canada benefited from South Africa's earlier victory over South Korea, which secured the African side second place in Group A and set up the Round of 32 meeting in Southern California, home to a large Korean community. -Field Level Media/Reuters
