MEXICO CITY - Sebastian Beccacece bid an emotional farewell as Ecuador coach after his team's 2-0 loss to Mexico in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 on Tuesday, saying he had hoped to remain in charge but accepted responsibility for falling short of the team's goal.
Ecuador entered the knockout stage with renewed confidence after a dramatic comeback win over Germany but was unable to overcome Mexico, which took control early and maintained its unbeaten defensive record in the tournament.
"Our contract ended with the World Cup. I don't think we achieved what we promised, which was to make this the best World Cup ever. Today it's my turn to say goodbye," Beccacece told reporters after the match at Estadio Azteca.
"That's why I have to leave. I would have liked to continue because of the support I received from the players and the management. But I understand how this works, and while it hurts, I believe the decision was clear."
Beccacece admitted Mexico dominated the opening half, leaving Ecuador struggling to gain a foothold in the match.
"We were outplayed in the first half," he said.
Ecuador improved after the break and controlled more possession as it searched for a way back into the contest, but Mexico's defense stood firm and prevented any comeback.
"We fought back, but we couldn't find the goal that would have given us a boost," Beccacece said.
Despite the disappointment of the defeat, the Argentine coach chose to reflect on the strong bond he built with his players and the Ecuadorian people during his tenure.
Asked about the legacy he leaves behind, Beccacece credited his squad rather than himself.
"The legacy belongs to the players because they have been the youngest team in Ecuador," he said.
"I have no complaints, only gratitude to the people and the players. I received so much affection and appreciation from the bottom of my heart. The players gave me two unforgettable hours after the match, and that's what I'll carry with me." -Reporting by Natalia Siniawski, editing by Peter Rutherford/Reuters
