BARCELONA – Atletico Madrid seized a commanding advantage in their Champions League quarter-final clash against Barcelona on Wednesday, securing a 2-0 first-leg victory at the iconic Camp Nou. Goals from Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth were enough to earn Diego Simeone’s side a decisive away win, with Barcelona left to rue missed opportunities.

Despite dominating possession and creating chances, Barcelona were undone by a combination of resolute defending and swift counter-attacks. The turning point came in the 42nd minute when Pau Cubarsi was shown a red card for bringing down Giuliano Simeone as the last man, leaving Barcelona to play the rest of the match with 10 men.

From the resulting free kick, Alvarez delivered a sublime 25-yard strike into the top corner of the net, sending the Camp Nou crowd into stunned silence.

The second half saw Barcelona push for an equalizer, with Marcus Rashford coming close to scoring from a free kick, which hit the crossbar. But Atletico’s disciplined defense held firm, and in the 70th minute, the visitors doubled their lead. Matteo Ruggeri delivered a pinpoint cross from the left, and Sorloth volleyed home from close range to seal the win.

Atletico’s victory leaves Barcelona with a mountain to climb in the second leg, as the winners of this tie will face either Arsenal or Sporting in the semifinals.

“We’re delighted with the win, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. The semi-final is still a long way off. We need to stay calm and confident, but keep our feet on the ground,” said Atletico’s Antoine Griezmann after the match.

With Raphinha and Frenkie De Jong absent through injury, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick handed a start to Marcus Rashford, pairing him with Robert Lewandowski and teenage winger Lamine Yamal. Rashford was lively on the left wing, stretching the Atletico defense and coming close to scoring on several occasions.

In the 13th minute, Rashford volleyed narrowly wide, and five minutes later, he thought he had given Barcelona the lead after converting a low cross from Yamal at the far post. However, celebrations were cut short when VAR ruled that Yamal was offside in the build-up.

Atletico, meanwhile, sat deep in a five-man defense, conceding possession but limiting Barcelona’s clear-cut chances. Yamal and Rashford continued to probe down the flanks, but the space in the final third was scarce. Despite some promising moments, Atletico’s counter-attacks remained dangerous, with Alvarez and Ademola Lookman failing to convert their opportunities.

In the 29th minute, Barcelona came close again when Rashford forced a smart save from Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso. Yamal later weaved past three defenders, only to see his shot blocked at close range.

But the game turned late in the first half. In the 42nd minute, a VAR review saw Cubarsi sent off for his foul on Giuliano Simeone, and Atletico wasted no time in capitalizing on the resulting free kick. Alvarez’s exquisite shot from 25 meters out left Barcelona stunned and with a lot to do in the second half.

Despite being a man down, Barcelona came out strong after the break, dominating possession but struggling to break down Atletico’s disciplined defense. In the 70th minute, the visitors sealed the win when Ruggeri’s cross from the left found Sorloth, who volleyed in from close range to give Atletico a two-goal cushion.

Atletico comfortably saw out the final minutes, and with a 2-0 lead, they head into the second leg with a significant advantage.

“We tried, but it wasn’t to be,” said Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo after the match.

“We came out stronger in the second half despite being a man down; we had possession but couldn’t find the net. We’re disappointed with the defeat, but I think we can turn it around.”

The second leg of this Champions League quarter-final will be played next week, with Barcelona facing a difficult task of overturning a two-goal deficit to keep their hopes of progression alive.
