Premier League leaders Arsenal F.C. strengthened their grip on the title race after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. on Wednesday in Brighton, England.
A first-half goal from Bukayo Saka proved enough for Arsenal, while second-placed Manchester City F.C. dropped points in a 2-2 home draw against relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest F.C., giving the North London side a significant advantage in the title race.
Arsenal struck early when Saka’s ninth-minute shot deflected past the Brighton defense and into the net. The goal ultimately stood as the match-winner as Mikel Arteta’s side produced a resilient defensive performance to record their 14th clean sheet of the league season.
Despite creating opportunities, Brighton were unable to break through Arsenal’s organized defense. Saka later described the performance as “ugly,” but the result extended Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table.
Arsenal now have 67 points from 30 matches, while Manchester City sit on 60 points from 29 games. However, the teams will still face each other in a potentially decisive clash on April 19.
“It’s a really difficult place to come and win,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said. “Every team that comes here suffers, but we did what we had to do to win. Considering the intensity of recent matches and the challenges the players have faced, getting this result is remarkable.”
Meanwhile, Manchester City were left frustrated after letting two leads slip against Nottingham Forest. Antoine Semenyo and Rodri scored for City, but Forest responded through Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson to secure an unexpected point.
City pushed heavily for a winner late in the match, but Forest defender Murillo cleared Savinho’s shot off the line in the final moments to preserve the draw.
Despite the setback, City manager Pep Guardiola insisted the title race is far from over.
“There are still many games to play,” Guardiola said. “If we analyze the match, the performance overall was good and there were many positive things. Of course, there are areas we can improve, but generally it was a solid display.”
Elsewhere, Manchester United F.C. suffered their first defeat under interim manager Michael Carrick, losing 2-1 to Newcastle United F.C..
Substitute William Osula scored a late solo goal to secure victory for Newcastle. The hosts had earlier taken the lead through a penalty from Anthony Gordon after Jacob Ramsey was sent off late in the first half. Casemiro briefly leveled the match with a header for United before Osula’s decisive strike.
“Newcastle deserved to win tonight,” Carrick said. “It hurts to say that, but that’s how it was. We need to get back to work and improve for the next game.”
In another match affecting the race for UEFA Champions League qualification, Chelsea F.C. defeated Aston Villa F.C. 4-1, with João Pedro scoring a hat-trick. The victory lifted Chelsea above Liverpool F.C. into fifth place with 48 points.
Manchester United remained third in the standings with 51 points, level with Aston Villa in fourth.
At the bottom of the table, Nottingham Forest’s draw kept them just outside the relegation zone on goal difference from West Ham United F.C., who secured a 1-0 win over Fulham F.C. thanks to a goal from Crysencio Summerville.
Both teams have 28 points and trail Tottenham Hotspur F.C., who sit on 29 points ahead of their crucial home match against Crystal Palace F.C. on Thursday. -Reporting by Martyn HermanEditing by Toby Davis/Reuters
