SOCCER: Arsenal make their own rules, says Brighton manager Huerzeler

Brighton boss Fabian Huerzeler slammed Arsenal for “making their own rules” after a 1-0 defeat, accusing the Premier League leaders of time-wasting despite Bukayo Saka’s early winner securing a key title-race victory. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta remained focused on the win, brushing off Huerzeler’s criticism.

BRIGHTON — Brighton and Hove Albion manager Fabian Huerzeler launched a scathing attack on Premier League leaders Arsenal following his team’s 1-0 home defeat on Wednesday, accusing Mikel Arteta’s side of “making their own rules.”

Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka scored the only goal in the ninth minute, securing a crucial win that moved the London club seven points clear in the title race, aided by Manchester City’s 2-2 draw at home against Nottingham Forest.

Brighton dominated much of the game but were left frustrated as a disciplined Arsenal side defended their lead.

Huerzeler Criticizes Arsenal’s Style

Huerzeler, who had previously criticized the length of time Arsenal take for set pieces, said he does not admire the way the league leaders play.

“There are different kinds of winning,” Huerzeler said. “If they win the Premier League, no one will ask how they win it. You can really feel they do everything to win the game, and in the end, it’s about the rules. If the Premier League, if the referee allows everything, then it’s difficult — they make their own rules. I will never be that kind of manager. I want my players to keep improving and keep playing football.”

He also singled out Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, accusing him of exaggerating fouls multiple times.

“We tried to keep the ball moving and create chances,” Huerzeler added. “In the end, the only way to punish opponents like this is by winning. Did anyone really enjoy this football game? One game, the ball is in play 60 minutes. Against Arsenal, only 50 minutes. Is this what supporters are paying for?”

Arteta Focuses on Title Race

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta downplayed Huerzeler’s criticism, preferring to focus on his team’s title ambitions.

“What a surprise,” Arteta said. “You just go back to previous games, and you’ll find a lot of comments like this. I love my players, we love how we compete, and that’s what matters.”

Arsenal now hold a commanding position in the Premier League, putting them in the driving seat to claim their first title since 2004.
