MANCHESTER, England – Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim expressed his frustration over his team's recurring lapses in concentration after a dramatic 4-4 draw with Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Monday.
Despite what seemed like a late winner from Matheus Cunha in the 79th minute, which gave United a 4-3 lead, the Red Devils were once again left frustrated. Bournemouth substitute Eli Junior Kroupi scored in the 84th minute to level the match, marking the second time in the game United had surrendered a lead.
"It's really disappointing, we are really disappointed," said Amorim after the match. "The result should have been completely different. Once again, like in our 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, we lost concentration for just six minutes in the second half, and they scored two goals. But we managed to get back into the game, we scored twice, and then we have to finish it off."
Despite their dominance, especially in the first half, United were left to rue missed opportunities. The team fired 17 shots, thoroughly outplaying Bournemouth, but could not convert enough chances to secure the win.
"We dominated and created so many chances," Amorim reflected. "We should have gone into halftime with a different scoreline. In the end, we deserved more."
Amorim emphasized the importance of inspiring Old Trafford fans with exciting football, even in the face of such a disappointing result.
"People, especially at Old Trafford, want to win, but they also want to be inspired by seeing the team play good football. We did that well in moments, but we need to be more clinical. We created so many chances."
The Portuguese manager noted that the problem lies less in tactics and more in mental focus.
"There were a lot of good things, but a lot to work on," Amorim said. "We're not winning games sometimes because of the small details. It’s not about the formation – whether it's a back four, three, or five – it’s about understanding the momentum of the game and being clinical when it matters."
In his bid to shake things up, Amorim adjusted his usual five-man defense by pushing Amad Diallo into a more attacking role. The change bore fruit early, with Diallo scoring from close range in the 13th minute.
"You could see it straight away in the dressing room; everyone was really disappointed," said Diallo, who highlighted the team's collective frustration despite his early goal.
While United showcased flashes of quality, the result once again revealed the need for greater consistency and mental sharpness if they are to turn dominant performances into victories. -Reporting by Lori EwingEditing by Christian Radnedge/Reuters
