The United States Men’s National Team officially unveiled its 2026 FIFA World Cup roster, highlighted by the inclusion of midfielder Gio Reyna, whose return marks one of the most talked-about decisions by head coach Mauricio Pochettino ahead of the tournament.

Reyna, the talented but injury-plagued playmaker and son of former USMNT captain Claudio Reyna, was involved in controversy surrounding former U.S. manager Gregg Berhalter following the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Despite concerns over injuries during recent seasons, Pochettino opted to include the Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder in the final squad.

Among the notable omissions were attacker Diego Luna and midfielder Tanner Tessmann, both of whom had featured regularly under Pochettino. Reports indicated Tessmann may still be recovering from an injury sustained during his campaign with Olympique Lyonnais in France’s Ligue 1.

The roster, which was initially leaked by The Guardian on Saturday, remains subject to change until June 1. Adjustments may still be made depending on injuries or other late developments before the tournament begins.

The Americans will open their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on June 12 against Paraguay national football team.

The squad features a balanced mix of experienced veterans and emerging talent. Goalkeepers include Matt Turner, Matt Freese and Chris Brady.

Defensively, the United States selected 10 players, including Sergino Dest, Antonee Robinson, Chris Richards and veteran defender Tim Ream. The large number of defenders suggests Pochettino could utilize formations featuring three center backs during the tournament.

In midfield, captain Tyler Adams will likely play a key role as the squad’s primary defensive midfielder alongside Weston McKennie, Sebastian Berhalter and Cristian Roldan.

The attacking group is led by star winger Christian Pulisic, supported by Brenden Aaronson, Tim Weah, Malik Tillman, Alejandro Zendejas and Reyna.

At striker, the Americans appear stronger than in previous World Cup cycles. Folarin Balogun enjoyed an impressive season with AS Monaco, while Haji Wright helped Coventry City F.C. secure promotion to the Premier League. Ricardo Pepi also continued his strong scoring form with PSV Eindhoven.

Pochettino’s selections indicate a preference for experience, tactical flexibility and attacking transitions as the United States prepares to host and compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. -Ian Quillen, Field Level Media/Reuters
