MILAN – The United States advanced to the Winter Olympics women’s ice hockey gold medal game with a commanding 5-0 win over Sweden in Monday’s semi-final at Santagiulia Arena.
Cayla Barnes opened the scoring in the first period, and the U.S. pulled away in the second with goals from Taylor Heise, Abbey Murphy, veteran Kendall Coyne Schofield, and Hayley Scamurra. The performance highlighted why the two-time champions were considered favorites heading into Milan.
The Americans will face the winner of Thursday’s semi-final between defending Olympic champions Canada and Switzerland for the gold medal.
Sweden, who last reached the Olympic podium with a silver medal in 2006, had defeated the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals but struggled to match the firepower of the world champions.
