LIVIGNO, Italy – Mathilde Gremaud of Switzerland, a top medal contender, withdrew from Monday's freestyle skiing Winter Olympics big air final after sustaining an injury just before the start of the event.
The Swiss team confirmed that Gremaud and fellow finalist Anouk Andraska were injured during training. Andraska suffered a wrist injury, while Gremaud injured her hip.
Gremaud, 26, claimed gold in the freestyle slopestyle final on February 9 and finished third in qualifiers for Monday's competition. She is also the two-time reigning slopestyle World Champion.
With Gremaud out, Eileen Gu of China, the defending big air Olympic champion and slopestyle silver medalist, and Meghan Oldham of Canada, who won bronze in slopestyle and led the qualification round, emerge as the top contenders for the final.
