OLYMPICS: Alpine skiing-'Small chance' Norway's Moeller can race in super-G, teammate says

Norway’s Fredrik Moeller is unlikely to race in the Olympic downhill after a training crash in Bormio left him with a dislocated shoulder, ruling him out of further downhill runs. A slim chance remains that the 25-year-old could still compete in the super-G.

BORMIO, Italy — Norwegian skier Fredrik Moeller is unlikely to return to the Stelvio slope for the Olympic races after crashing during the first men’s downhill training run.

Moeller, a gold medalist in the super-G at Bormio during the 2024 World Cup season, was airlifted to a hospital on Wednesday after dislocating his left shoulder. The 25-year-old has since returned to his hotel in Bormio, where he is recovering with support from his teammates.

Speaking on Thursday after the second downhill training run, fellow Norwegian skier Adrian Smiseth Sejersted said the team has been focused on lifting Moeller’s spirits as he rests and recuperates.

A spokesperson for the Norwegian team confirmed that Moeller will not take part in Friday’s third and final downhill training run or in Saturday’s downhill race.

There remains a slim possibility that Moeller could still compete in the super-G event, Sejersted said, though the chances are minimal.

“If he does it with a dislocated shoulder, I’m impressed,” Sejersted said. “It’s back in now, but it was fully out.”

Moeller’s condition will continue to be monitored as the Olympic schedule progresses. -Reporting by Marleen Kaesebier and Martyn Herman in Bormio, editing by Ed Osmond and Christian Radnedge/Reuters
