John Gibson and Cam Talbot combined for a shutout as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the host New Jersey Devils 3-0 on Sunday night at the Prudential Center.
Gibson stopped all 21 shots he faced through the first two periods. Late in the second, New Jersey's Timo Meier collided with Lucas Raymond, knocking him into Gibson. Talbot came in to relieve Gibson to start the third period and made 10 saves. The Red Wings’ combined shutout was their first since March 2019, when Jonathan Bernier and Jimmy Howard achieved the feat.
Defenseman Moritz Seider led Detroit offensively with a goal and two assists, while James van Riemsdyk contributed a goal and an assist. Dominik Shine scored his first career NHL goal. Patrick Kane added two assists. The win snapped Detroit’s two-game losing streak.
Jacob Markstrom stopped 27 shots for New Jersey, ending the Devils’ four-game winning streak.
Seider opened the scoring just 3:20 into the game, beating Markstrom on the short side from the right point with a fadeaway wrist shot that was screened by Andrew Copp in front of the net.
Van Riemsdyk extended the lead to 2-0 with a power-play goal at 6:37 of the second period, tipping in Seider’s shot from the right point. It marked Detroit’s fourth power-play goal in their last 34 opportunities. The Devils hit two posts during the middle period.
Markstrom made a spectacular glove save on defenseman Justin Faulk’s partial breakaway with 4:23 left in the second period. Faulk was making his Red Wings debut after being acquired from the St. Louis Blues at the trade deadline on Friday, logging 19:28 of ice time.
Shine capped the scoring with 9:36 remaining, converting a backhand pass from van Riemsdyk across the crease. At 32, Shine is in his 10th professional season, with most of his career spent in the American Hockey League. He was recalled from Grand Rapids on Saturday.
Detroit captain Dylan Larkin did not play due to a lower-body injury.
