John Carlson recorded the first hat trick of his NHL career as the Anaheim Ducks rolled to a dominant 6-1 victory over the visiting San Jose Sharks on Thursday night.
Leo Carlsson, Alex Killorn, and Frank Vatrano also scored for Anaheim (42-32-5, 89 points), which snapped a six-game losing streak while improving to 24-13-3 at home this season. The Ducks delivered a balanced offensive effort and controlled much of the game from the opening period onward.
Carlsson set the tone early, opening the scoring just 2:59 into the first period. He danced through the defense before firing a glove-side shot past San Jose goaltender Yaroslav Askarov for his 28th goal of the season. Anaheim doubled its lead at 6:20 when Carlson converted on a one-timer off a Mikael Granlund pass, beating Askarov blocker side for his 12th of the year.
The Ducks outshot the Sharks 10-5 in the opening frame and carried a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Anaheim extended its advantage in the second period when Killorn pounced on a rebound off Beckett Sennecke’s shot at 5:15, tapping in his 14th goal of the season to make it 3-0.
Carlson then took over in the third period. On a power play at 10:31, he unleashed a point shot through traffic that beat a screened Askarov for his second goal of the night and 13th of the season. The Sharks briefly responded at 12:40 when Shakir Mukhamadullin finished a feed from Tyler Toffoli, snapping a shot from the high slot for his fifth goal of the year.
However, Carlson completed his hat trick at 14:03 during a 5-on-3 power play, redirecting a Troy Terry setup short side past Askarov to reach 14 goals on the season.
Frank Vatrano capped the scoring for Anaheim at 17:32 of the third period, burying a backhand rebound off Mason McTavish’s attempt to extend the lead to 6-1.
Lukas Dostal was solid in net for the Ducks, stopping 18 shots to secure the win. Askarov made 24 saves for San Jose (37-34-7, 81 points), which has now dropped consecutive games.
The teams met for the fourth and final time this season. Anaheim previously won 7-6 in overtime on Oct. 11, while San Jose responded with wins of 5-4 on Dec. 29 and 4-3 on April 1.
