The Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens are headed to a decisive Game 7 showdown on Monday night to determine who will advance from their Eastern Conference second-round playoff series.
Buffalo forced the winner-take-all game after dominating Montreal in Game 6 with an 8-3 victory on Saturday night. The Sabres scored seven unanswered goals to keep their postseason hopes alive and send the series back to Buffalo.
Despite the lopsided loss, Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki remains confident his team can recover. He said Montreal has already faced a similar situation during the first round against the Tampa Bay Lightning, where the Canadiens also needed seven games before advancing.
Suzuki admitted the Canadiens may have felt extra pressure trying to secure the series at home in front of their passionate fans in Montreal. He emphasized that the team must stay focused, keep things simple, and avoid letting emotions affect their performance heading into the deciding game.
The winner of Game 7 will move on to face the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference final, which begins Thursday in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Carolina enters the next round well-rested after sweeping both the Philadelphia Flyers and Ottawa Senators in the opening two rounds of the playoffs.
During the regular season, Montreal won all three meetings against Carolina, while Buffalo dropped two of three games against the Hurricanes.
For the Sabres, Monday’s matchup also represents a rare opportunity in franchise history. Buffalo has played seven previous Game 7s, with its only victory coming in overtime against the Ottawa Senators during the 1997 conference quarterfinals.
Sabres forward Tage Thompson said the team is embracing the pressure and excitement of playing in a Game 7, describing it as the type of moment players dream about throughout their careers.
Thompson added that Buffalo’s approach will remain unchanged after the strong performance in Game 6. He said the Sabres succeeded by keeping their game simple, limiting mistakes, and competing hard on every shift.
Game 7 is expected to deliver an intense atmosphere as both teams fight for a place in the Eastern Conference final. -Field Level Media/Reuters
