The New York Rangers have placed captain J.T. Miller on injured reserve due to an upper-body issue, multiple media outlets reported Tuesday.
ESPN confirmed that this injury is separate from the one that sidelined Miller for seven games in December and January.
Miller made a full recovery in time to help the United States win Olympic gold in Milan, Italy, where he was instrumental in the team’s perfect penalty kill, going 17-for-17 throughout the Winter Games.
The 32-year-old center has had a challenging season with the Rangers, who currently sit last in the Eastern Conference. Fans at Madison Square Garden expressed their frustration by booing players off the ice after Monday’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets, dropping New York’s home record to 7-15-6.
Despite the struggles, Miller recorded an assist against Columbus, bringing his season total to 38 points (14 goals, 24 assists) in 51 games. However, his minus-24 rating is the lowest on the team and among the bottom 10 in the NHL.
Over his career, Miller has amassed 747 points (274 goals, 473 assists) in 922 games with the Rangers (2012–18, 2025–26), Tampa Bay Lightning (2017–19), and Vancouver Canucks (2019–25).
Originally drafted by the Rangers as the No. 15 overall pick in 2011, Miller was reacquired from the Canucks last January and was named team captain in September.
