WASHINGTON — The Washington Wizards do not intend to trade veteran forward Anthony Davis after acquiring him at last season's trade deadline, according to ESPN.
Speculation about Davis' future surfaced after a report said the Golden State Warriors planned to pursue LeBron James in free agency and trade for Davis in an effort to reunite the former teammates who won the 2020 NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers.
James confirmed on Tuesday that he will leave the Lakers, but Washington appears determined to keep Davis as part of its long-term plans. The Wizards are also reportedly set to sign Trae Young to a four-year, $212 million contract after acquiring him at the trade deadline.
Davis becomes eligible on Aug. 6 for a four-year, $275 million contract extension that would replace the player option in his current deal for the 2027-28 season. Along with Young and No. 1 overall draft pick AJ Dybantsa, the Wizards hope to build a core capable of ending the franchise's five-year playoff drought.
The 33-year-old has yet to make his Washington debut after suffering ligament damage in his left hand before being traded from the Dallas Mavericks in February. He played a career-low 20 games last season, averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.7 blocks.
A 10-time All-Star, Davis owns career averages of 24.0 points and 10.7 rebounds in 807 games (800 starts) over 14 NBA seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans franchise, the Lakers, and the Mavericks. -Field Level Media/Reuters
