WASHINGTON — Kristaps Porzingis returned to one of his former homes in style, scoring 30 points in just 26 minutes as the Golden State Warriors defeated the host Washington Wizards 125-117 on Monday night, handing Washington their 12th consecutive loss.
De'Anthony Melton contributed 27 points, while Gui Santos added 18 as the Warriors shot 50.5% from the field. The victory marked coach Steve Kerr's 600th regular-season win, helping Golden State bounce back from a five-game skid.
Trae Young led the Wizards with 21 points in 21 minutes but left the game in the third quarter after suffering a bruised right quad. He also tied for the team lead with five assists.
The Warriors controlled the game from the start, leading by double digits after a late 9-0 run pushed them ahead 34-23 at the end of the first quarter. Porzingis was heavily involved in that stretch, scoring a layup and assisting on Santos’ 3-pointer and Brandin Podziemski’s layup.
Golden State extended its lead to as many as 17 points, but the Wizards fought back. Julian Reese’s three-point play brought Washington within 115-110 with 4:29 remaining, and Bilal Coulibaly’s two free throws at 2:24 cut the deficit to six.
Porzingis sealed the win with a pair of free throws, and Gary Payton II converted a Santos assist into a layup, restoring a double-digit lead that Washington could not overcome. Payton finished with 15 points, while Podziemski and Pat Spencer added 10 apiece. The Warriors tallied 32 assists on 46 baskets, with Draymond Green dishing a game-high seven and grabbing eight rebounds.
For the Wizards, Coulibaly and Will Riley each scored 21 points, matching Young for the team-high. Tre Johnson added 13 points, Reese 12, and Tristan Vukcevic 11. Riley also tied Young with five assists, while Coulibaly and Anthony Gill grabbed eight rebounds each.
The Wizards remain in a slump, having not won since Feb. 20.
