SILVERSTONE, England — Max Verstappen criticized Red Bull after retiring from the British Grand Prix on Sunday, describing a rear wing issue on his car as "super-dangerous" following a crash while battling for a podium finish.
The four-time Formula One world champion lost control and crashed into the gravel at Stowe late in the race, triggering a safety car.
Verstappen said the problem occurred when the rear wing failed to fully attach while entering a corner, causing a sudden loss of downforce that sent the car spinning off the track.
"At this point, it's super dangerous because I could have really hurt myself two times. I was lucky in Austria; I was lucky here. But that's why you get really fed up with it," Verstappen said.
The Dutch driver also crashed during qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix two weeks earlier but recovered to finish second in the race.
Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies acknowledged Verstappen's frustration and said the team would thoroughly investigate the issue to prevent it from happening again.
"He's right not to be happy," Mekies said. "It is very unpleasant for drivers to be let down by the car in high-speed corners in two consecutive races, even if the causes were different."
Mekies added that Red Bull would take the matter seriously and implement the necessary measures to ensure the problem does not recur, saying Verstappen had every reason to be disappointed after the incident. -Reporting by Alan Baldwin; editing by Clare Fallon/Reuters
