SILVERSTONE, England — Reigning Formula One world champion Lando Norris expects this weekend's British Grand Prix at Silverstone to present a different challenge under the sport's new engine regulations, though he believes fans will still enjoy an exciting race.
Norris, who claimed victory at the historic circuit last year, said Formula One's new power unit era has changed how drivers approach racing. With a greater emphasis on electric power, energy management and battery recharging have become key factors throughout the race.
The McLaren driver said some of Silverstone's iconic high-speed corners, including Copse and the Maggots-Becketts sequence, will no longer feel as demanding as in previous seasons because of the new technical requirements.
Despite the changes, Norris remains optimistic about the spectacle, saying the circuit will still deliver fast racing and an entertaining show for fans. He acknowledged that drivers will spend more time decelerating in certain sections but said it is simply part of the sport's evolving technology.
Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time Formula One world champion and record nine-time winner of the British Grand Prix, is also looking forward to racing at Silverstone after securing his first victory for Ferrari at the Spanish Grand Prix last month.
However, the 41-year-old admitted the new engine regulations have altered the character of the circuit. Based on simulator data, Hamilton said drivers will no longer carry full speed through corners such as Copse, while the Maggots-Becketts section will require lifting off the throttle and coasting, making the track feel significantly different from previous years.
