Jackson Merrill’s two-run double capped a five-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday night as the San Diego Padres extended their winning streak to seven games with a dramatic 7-6 victory over the visiting Seattle Mariners.

Merrill lined a 2-2 fastball from reliever José A. Ferrer down the left-field line. Luis Campusano scored the tying run, and Ramón Laureano crossed home for the winning run after Randy Arozarena was unable to make a throw to the plate as the ball slipped from his hand.

The win went to Alek Jacob (1-0), who pitched two scoreless innings in his first Major League appearance of the season after being recalled Tuesday from Triple-A El Paso.

Mariners closer Andrés Muñoz (2-2) was charged with all five ninth-inning runs. Luke Raley finished with a four-hit performance, including a two-run home run.

Ohtani (2-0) allowed one run on two hits and two walks in a rare outing where he did not also serve as a hitter. It marked the first time since May 2021 that Ohtani pitched without appearing at the plate on the same day.

In Baltimore, Adrian Del Castillo drove in five runs, including a two-run home run in the 10th inning, as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Orioles 8-5 in extra innings.

Del Castillo also added a two-run triple and matched his RBI total from his first six games combined. Every player in Arizona’s starting lineup recorded at least one hit through nine innings, including Corbin Carroll, who singled twice.

Jeremiah Jackson homered and drove in three runs for Baltimore. Starter Kyle Bradish allowed four runs on eight hits over six innings.

In Pittsburgh, Carmen Mlodzinski tossed six shutout innings to lead the Pirates to a 2-0 three-hit victory over the Washington Nationals.
