Cutter Gauthier broke a tie with 1:14 remaining as Anaheim completed a wild 6-5 comeback victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday, giving Ducks coach Joel Quenneville his 1,000th NHL win. Quenneville became only the second coach in league history to reach the milestone, joining Scotty Bowman, who has 1,244 victories.
Leo Carlsson paced Anaheim with one goal and two assists, helping the Ducks secure their third straight win and move into second place in the Pacific Division. Ian Moore, Alex Killorn, Olen Zellweger, and Beckett Sennecke also scored for the Ducks, who have won 10 of their last 12 games. Goaltender Lukas Dostal made 22 saves in the victory.
With overtime looming, Gauthier buried his second attempt of the night, capping a furious Anaheim comeback that erased three separate deficits and saw the Ducks score four times in the final period.
Matt Savoie scored once and added two assists for Edmonton, who have dropped four straight games. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Evan Bouchard each recorded a goal and an assist, while Jack Roslovic and Zach Hyman also scored. Starting goalie Tristan Jarry was pulled after allowing five goals on 25 shots, and Connor Ingram took the loss after giving up one goal on four shots.
Both teams were playing their first game since the NHL’s three-week Olympic break.
Edmonton built three separate leads during the game, including two with a two-goal advantage, only for Anaheim to respond each time. Roslovic opened the scoring 13 seconds into the game, converting a partial breakaway on the Oilers’ first shot. Nugent-Hopkins extended the lead to 2-0 at 9:03 of the first period on a close-range chip set up by Connor McDavid.
Anaheim responded quickly as Moore scored 87 seconds later, and Killorn tied the game 2-2 in the second period on a power-play rebound. Hyman and Bouchard then pushed Edmonton ahead 4-2 late in the second, with Bouchard scoring just 35 seconds after Hyman’s goal.
The Ducks erased the deficit early in the third period. Carlsson, returning from an 11-game injury absence, buried a rebound 90 seconds into the frame, and Zellweger tied the game again with a deflection just 85 seconds later. Savoie gave Edmonton another lead at 5:53 of the third on a power-play goal, but Sennecke responded 46 seconds later with a slot shot that sealed the comeback.
