Miami’s blockbuster acquisition of Miami Heat star Giannis Antetokounmpo has reshaped the 2026–27 NBA championship landscape, instantly transforming the franchise from a long shot into a legitimate contender in the eyes of oddsmakers.

The Heat opened the offseason at +3500 to win the title at BetMGM. Even after emerging as one of the reported finalists to land Antetokounmpo, Miami was still listed at +3000 on Monday.

That changed late Monday night when reports surfaced that a deal had been finalized, with the Milwaukee Bucks choosing Miami’s package over a competing offer from the Boston Celtics that reportedly centered on star forward Jaylen Brown.

Following the news, Miami’s title odds shortened sharply to +1800. BetMGM reported that 23% of all championship bets placed after the trade news broke were on the Heat. Miami’s odds of winning the Eastern Conference were also adjusted from +1200 to +650, with the team drawing 39% of all conference-title wagers in that span.

The Celtics retained Brown and continue to hold the shortest title odds among Eastern Conference teams at +650. The defending champions, the New York Knicks, saw their odds slightly drift from +700 to +750. No other Eastern Conference team is priced shorter than the Detroit Pistons at +2500.

At the top of the overall title board, Western Conference rivals the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs remain co-favorites at +260.

BetMGM also noted that Boston has attracted the highest percentage of total title bets at 14.3%, while Oklahoma City leads in total money wagered at 53.5%, well ahead of Boston’s 10%.

The Bucks, who were widely expected to explore trading Antetokounmpo this offseason, saw their championship odds shorten from +50000 to +30000 despite the departure of their franchise cornerstone. The move signals a longer-term rebuild, prioritizing draft capital and depth over immediate contention.

Milwaukee’s front office opted for Miami’s package over a potential deal centered on Brown, aiming instead to stockpile assets and reset around future flexibility.

According to reports, the Heat’s trade package includes guard Tyler Herro, center Kel’el Ware, forward Jaime Jaquez Jr., guard Kasparas Jakucionis, first-round picks in 2026 (No. 13 overall), 2031 and 2033, a 2030 pick swap, and a 2033 second-round pick.

In return, Milwaukee is also sending forward Bobby Portis to Miami as part of the agreement.

Antetokounmpo, 31, had been the subject of trade speculation for more than a year. The two-time MVP is under contract through 2026–27 with a $58.5 million cap hit and holds a $62.8 million player option for 2027–28, according to Spotrac.

He played a career-low 36 games in the 2025–26 season, during which the Bucks missed the playoffs for the first time since 2015–16. Antetokounmpo suffered a hyperextended left knee on March 15 and was sidelined for the remainder of the season amid reported tension over his medical status with the team. -Field Level Media/Reuters
