GOLF: Scottie Scheffler commits to Scottish Open ahead of The Open defense

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has confirmed that he will compete in the Scottish Open as part of his preparation for the defense of his title at The Open Championship.

Scheffler, 29, is skipping this week’s Truist Championship ahead of the second major of the year, the PGA Championship. However, he will return to competition the week before The Open by playing in Scotland.

“I always enjoy coming to the Genesis Scottish Open and taking on the challenge of links-style golf as part of an exciting couple of weeks in the UK,” Scheffler said. “The tournament always has a strong field and the Scottish fans help to make it a fun week.”

The American star tied for eighth place in last year’s Scottish Open, which was won by Chris Gotterup. World No. 2 Rory McIlroy also finished strongly in that event, sharing second place with England’s Marco Penge, just two shots behind the winner. Both players are expected to return this year, alongside Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre.

The Scottish Open, scheduled for July 9 to 12, is co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour. The event offers ranking points for both the Race to Dubai and FedEx Cup standings.

The Open Championship will follow from July 16 to 19 at Royal Birkdale and will serve as the final major tournament of the 2026 season. -Field Level Media/Reuters
